Russian tennis star Mirra Andreeva saw her run at the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome come to an end in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
The 19-year-old eighth seed was eliminated by third-seeded American Coco Gauff, losing 6‑4, 2‑6, 4‑6 after a grueling two‑hour, 18‑minute battle.
Gauff now advances to the semifinals, where she will face Romanian Sorana Cirstea, the 26th seed who earlier stunned world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the third round.
Andreeva currently sits at No. 7 in the global rankings, making her the top‑ranked Russian player. She has claimed five WTA singles titles in her career.
The Rome tournament, featuring a €7.22 million prize pool, will conclude on May 16. It is categorized as a WTA 1000 event, second in prestige only to Grand Slams and the WTA Finals.
